Weekend of Fencing in Shetland June 14/15th For Information and to register interest click here
News Date: 05/12/2024
Hi everyone, Just catching up hera after 2 weeks without internet!
Some news for December and we are going to be busy next year as we develop our Shetland based competitions.
Mhairi Gifford has been very successful recently. Following her selection to fence for Scotland recently, she took part in the 5 Nations Competition in Northern Ireland. Mhairi was part of a winning Scottish team, bringing back quite a deficit to win her event for her team in the Women's foil.
Last weekend Mhairi took part in the Scottish Senior Open, the highest level of competition in Scotland each year.
The competition starts with the fencers competing in 2 rounds of poules, each poule having 6 fencers. It is important to do well in each fight as all of them provide a seeding for the direct elimination rounds. Mhairi just lost one fight in each poule, both 5-4, giving her a good seeding.
Mhairi progressed well in the following direct elimination rounds. These are longer matches to 15 hits over 3 time periods. In the last 8 stage, Mhairi came up against the fencer she lost to in the poules. A rethink of tactics and a more aggressive approach led to a victory 15-2.
The semi-final was much closer, but Mhairi came through 15-11 to reach her first Scottish Open final. This was to be against last year’s winner, the top ranked fencer in Scotland and 9th in the GB rankings. The final kept close with only 1 or 2 hits difference through to 14-14. The last hit in these close matches puts a lot of pressure on and it is a mark of Mhairi’s form and confidence that she won the final hit to win the Scottish Open title 15-14.
The AGM will be a fairly brief part of this meeting, and an agenda will be out soon. The main part of the meeting will be to discuss our busy projects next year. Once outlined We would like to get input from club members. These days with travel and accomodation being tight, we have to organise our events well in advance. I hope you can make it along and not be put off by the 'AGM' bit!.
For a break from all the Christmas telly, why not get along to Vidlin Hall to support our next in line of our Quiz Nights. Click here for details. This provides much needed funds for replacing worn out and broken kit.
We will aim to present these at the club sessions on the last dates before Christmas, - see calendar. We could also present some on the AGM date. I will contact each prizewinner to see what suits them best and we can get photes done.
I hope to see you all coming upto Christmas
